"Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled, Nor Let It Be Afraid" (John 14:27)

To Love Jesus And To Make Him Loved

The Fraternity of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Circular Letter For July
Year of Our Lord 2009
Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul

Dear Brothers and Sisters, the Lord give you peace.
Many spiritual directors have found a common ailment among devout souls who are working to know, love and serve God with all of their hearts. These souls, perhaps like yourselves, dread offending the good God, and wish very much to live a life of peace united to Him at all costs. This ailment is fear, sadness and discouragement. It leads to a lack of confidence and a offensive and false fear of God which ultimately displeases Him.

Deo gratias we have great souls such as the Franciscan Fr. Athanase, Pere Almire Pichon, St. Therese of Lisieux and Fr. Mateo Crawley who had devoted their lives to God encouraging souls not to fear, but to serve Him through love. To know His Heart as it really is, and to realize that He is our Father. Really, God is our Father, our Papa, yes we may dare to be that familiar with our Father. St. Paul explained that we are really the adopted sons of the good God, he powerfully exhorted Christians to be free of servile fear : “For you have not received the spirit of bondage again in fear; but you have received the spirit of adoption of sons; whereby we cry: Abba (Father).”( Rom. 8. 15.) Bishop Sheen in one of his conferences explained that the translation of Abba, is a tender expression, a filial statement like the word Daddy. Christ Himself used this expression, to teach us to boldly confide in Our Father in Heaven: “Abba, Father, all things are possible to Thee.” (Mark 14.36.)

The Devil, who knows that he cannot snare souls who are of good will into mortal sin, tries relentlessly, to plunge them into sadness, into discouragement, into a sea of scruples. He who was very pleased to see the triumph of that horrendous error of Jansenism, wishes to warp our vision, and our knowledge of the true God, the God who is Love and Who communicates Peace wherever He reigns! Pere Pichon marvelously tears the mask which the Devil would love put on God, a false image of terrifying God: “My friends, you have the wrong idea of the good God if you believe Him to be hard of heart, a Master difficult to please, who weighs you down with heavy burdens. Oh permit me to say that, even before you, I became acquainted with that view of a rigorous Master. I also trembled before Him. I calumniated Him in my failure to appreciate His goodness when I was a child. I said to myself, “They want me to love and serve so terrible a Master, but there is nothing attractive about Him. He is a harsh and terrifying God. I might tremble before Him, yes, but love Him, adore Him? Fear Him? Oh, yes. Fear Him, above all! But love Him? Impossible! Show me a whip? Menace me with hell? Oh, no, no, it is not that way that my heart can be won. No, I refuse to have anything to do with such a god. He is harsh! He is a caricature of the true God! He is a false god! A counterfeit god!”(1)

The Sacred Heart of Jesus, our true Brother, has come to earth to reveal Himself to us, to assure us, that He is a God Who loves to pardon our sins, Who wishes to make up for all our weaknesses and to abolish our sins forever! To reveal that though He is our Divine King, reigning forever in Heaven, He is still and always will be the Jesus of the Gospel. The Jesus Who, wherever He went did good, casting out demons, curing physical sicknesses, forgiving sins and converting souls, pouring out unutterable compassion and love. The Jesus who “came not to destroy souls but to save them.” (Luke 9.56) Who stays with us in Blessed Sacrament, as our nourishment and our strength, Who has left us the Sacraments and the priesthood so that we would hear His voice and obtain His pardon. Father Athanase in his wonderful work Why Are You Fearful, stated quoting many places in Holy Writ to prove his point that:“Yes, the good God is not even pleased with fear in His service. And yet many men and books of today repeat it over and over again: “Has not the Lord in the Gospel frequently threatened judgement and hell? And should not such threats fill us with fear?” True, the Saviour has pronounced these terrible threats, and that not only once. But for whom were they meant? Above all for the proud, the lazy, the uncharitable, the unbelieving! And the same Saviour’s favorite topic was confidence.”(2)

We can see that in the Holy Gospel, the only requisite for Our Lord’s miraculous action is faith. He wants us to trust Him, to believe in Him, to hope for everything from Him. The blind come to Him to be healed: “Do you believe, that I can do this unto you... According to your faith be it done unto you” (Matt. 9.28) And they can see! St. Therese in a letter to Fr. Roulland boldly proclaimed her trust, and cast out all fear of the much misunderstood justice of God, again all the while quoting Holy Writ: “I hope as much from God’s justice as from His mercy. It is because He is just that He ‘is compassionate and filled with meekness, slow to punish and abounding in mercy.’ For He knows our frailness. He remembers that we are but dust. As a father is tender for his children, so the Lord has compassion for us!... That, Brother, is what I think of God’s justice. My way is all trust and love. I do not understand souls who are afraid of so kind a friend... A single word of (Holy Scripture) discloses to my soul infinite horizons, perfection seems to me easy: I see that it suffices to recognize one’s nothingness and to abandon one’s self like a child in the arms of the good Lord. (LT, May 9,1897.)”(3)

A common trap of Satan is to make devout souls think they have sinned where there is not question of it. Or, he will at least try to make their situation so foggy and doubtful, that they are torn from their union with Jesus and fixated on themselves. Pere Pichon tries to set souls free in his explanation of certain principles which it is good to study: “There are three kinds of doubtful sins, depending upon whether the doubt concerns the act, the gravity, or the confession. The doubt may concern the act itself. Did I really commit that fault? “It seems to me that I did.” Are you sure? “No.” Then you need not accuse yourself. The act is doubtful. “Yes, Father, I committed that sin. I am fully convinced of it.” Did you realize at the moment that you were offending mortally?” “Father, I only saw that afterward.” One does not sin after the act is committed. At the very time of the act did you realize that you were sinning mortally? “No, Father.” Then it is a doubtful sin and you need not accuse yourself. Father, I am certain that I committed that sin and I knew it was serious, but I am not sure if I accused myself of it. Perhaps I did, perhaps not.” It is a doubtful sin according to the principle: the doubtful does not oblige confession. In order that one commit mortal sin, it is necessary that the conscience speak clearly. When the conscience hesitates, it is a good sign. We can never be in the state of mortal sin without being aware of it.”(4)

Fr. Athanase O.F.M. tells us: “But think what is required for a mortal sin: there must be the omission of a grievous obligation, or an act of disobedience against a commandment of God in an important matter- and this must take place with full knowledge and deliberation, and a completely free consent of the will. Should any of these three conditions be lacking, or should you honestly doubt whether these three- important matter, full deliberation and full consent- were present, then there is no question of grievous sin. Foolish and contrary to the teaching of theologians is the opinion, that a person can stumble, as it were, into a grievous sin without knowing it or wanting to commit it. Thus the learned Father Pesch.”(5)

It is not to put a blanket my dear brethren on the ugliness of sin that this little letter is being put forth! May God forbid that! But, it is our experience, that an unhealthy fear of the good God; a false fear, the fear which leads to discouragement and a certain inability to sacrifice and do good, is a common snare of the evil one. It is something which cannot be resisted enough! It is because trust, confidence and love of the good God, will aid our souls in all of the different aspects of the spiritual life, and will procure for us a spirit which is willing to pour itself out for Him, Who has poured Himself out with infinite love for love of us that we combat this erroneous image of God. It is so that we may serve the Sacred Heart with love as He truly desires that we will fight this spirit, very evil indeed, of sadness and discouragement.

For this reason we will continue to relate in future, what many holy souls have left for us on this subject, so that we may defend ourselves from this terrible snare, and will in future through the grace of the good God, serve the Sacred Heart in a spirit of sons and daughters, and not as trembling, terrified little servants, for He has said to us: “I will not now call you servants: for the servant knoweth not what his lord doth. But I have called you friends.” (John 15.15.) May God grant that we pray, and serve Him with this spirit of friendship!

We wish to close this circular, wishing our beloved Rev. Fr. Freddy Mery S.S.P.X. a happy 30th anniversary in the sacred priesthood! A priest forever and one serving the good God on this earth for 30 years. Thank you Pater, for all that you do, and especially for taking very good care of this little flock with so much love in Il Poverello.

Your little servant in the Merciful Love of God,

Fra Pio-Francis T.O.S.F.

For The Love of Canada

Pax et Bonum!

Dear brothers and sisters,
Since today is Canada day, and our country's patron is Saint St. Joseph, and since we, like so many nations are in such a state of moral de-gradation, we ask all of our brethren, both Canadian and those who our Fraternity is in contact with in other countries, along with those who regularly read this blog site, to join us in saying their Hour of Compline (or evening prayers) this evening for these intentions:

1. In honour of St. Joseph patron of Canada.

2. For the special protection of St. Joseph that Canada may be spared the annihilation which Our Lady of Fatima warned us about.

3. For the triumph of Tradition and the true religion in our country, and that its people may all hail Christ as King and Mary as Queen. Finally the conversion of poor sinners in our nation.

Happy Feast of the Precious Blood of Jesus, and happy Canada day!

Your servant in Il Poverello,
Fra Pio-Francis T.O.S.F.

St. Francis Gives Us Another Sister

I have great news! Sr. Catherine made her profession today at Canadian Martyrs Church in Orillia, Ontario. Deo gratias! Sister becomes the youngest professed member of our fraternity at 16 years of age. It was the first time that a profession was made outside of the Church of Transfiguration, which is located in Toronto. Our fraternity now totals 13 professed members with 3 more to come by the end of the year if it be Our Lord's will. Below are some pictures taken of the ceremony.

Feast of St. Anthony of Padua

O St. Anthony, who at my baptism was chosen as my guardian and under whose patronage I became an adopted child of God and solemnly renounced Satan, his works, and allurements, assist me by thy powerful intercession in the fulfillment of these sacred promises. Amen.

Roses For MARY

Ave Maria
Fraternity of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

Circular Letter For May & June
Year of Our Lord 2009

The problems and crisis which threaten the Church, the world, the economic situation, politics, and the souls of men, cannot possibly come to a happy end unless they are in conformity with the Holy and Divine Will of Almighty God. The General Superior of the SSPX knowing this has not called us to fight in a crusade of physical arms or blood shed. Nor has he called us to fight for a cause that would benefit the Society which he captains but has shown much wisdom in turning to MARY for the good of the entire world.

“And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon was under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.” (Apoc. 12.) It is well known that the crown of twelve stars with which Our Lady is crowned represents the twelve Apostles and the Church. Does it not seem wise to heed the request of our dear Mother MARY to say the Holy Rosary for peace in the world and the Church? Is it not wisdom to connect these realities bound up as they are in the Divine Will, that is, the Virgin Mother, Her Rosary and the Church which is experiencing an incredible unheard of crisis?

The Holy Rosary, how many times in Fatima did Our Lady ask us to recite it! Little Lucia asked the Virgin to help those who were infirm and suffering: please cure so and so... Our Lady’s answer even to physical maladies was to tell them to pray the Rosary. (1) Indeed the Rosary, for it brings a flood of spiritual graces upon souls who pray it! If one feels only dryness and monotony in the recitation of the Rosary, if one has to do violence to oneself to say their Rosary, fear not! Our Lady did not say to feel your Rosary but to pray it!

We will benefit from our Rosary if it is said oozing with devotion and sweetness, if it is said in the desert of the dry spirit, if it is said on the roof, in the valley, walking, sitting, driving, it matters not just say the blessed Rosary! We must obey, for our own Mother has said to us through Sr. Lucia: “If people will do what I tell you many souls will be saved, and there will be peace.” (2) “Continue to say the Rosary every day... in order to obtain peace for the world.”(3)

This crusade called by his lordship Bishop Fellay calling for twelve million Rosaries said for the consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of MARY may very well be one of the most important crusades ever called in Church history. It is a crusade which has been called long before our good Bishop had launched it, by Our Blessed Lady Herself.

Oh MARY! It is impossible dear brethren to relate with the human tongue how much MARY has done for each of us. It is true that She did not experience the pain of child birth which is a consequence of sin, of course because She is spotless. JESUS, Her firstborn caused no pain in this regard. But Her other offspring, that is, mankind, have caused more suffering to Her Immaculate Heart than all the child births this world will ever see! As the Virgin Mother gave birth to Her children at the foot of the Holy Cross, She knew very well it was at the price of Her only begotten Son, and this sorrow, this torture and pain was really inexplicable.

What does the Virgin ask us in return for Her love and sacrifice? Nothing really, for the recitation of the Rosary, Devotion to Her Immaculate Heart, the first Saturday devotions, these are all asked of us for our own good. She wants us to be with Her in Heaven, that is what She, the Queen Mother wants, this is what She asks that we too desire!

How simple the good God and His Virgin Mother are! We break our little minds inventing different ways in which to serve God. Look how easy They have made the path to eternal life: “He (God) wants to establish the Devotion to My Immaculate Heart in the world. I promise salvation to those who embrace it and their souls will be loved by God as flowers placed by Myself to adorn His throne.” (4) The good God has thrown us the life line, our last hope in these perilous times. The Immaculate Heart of MARY.

Five Holy Communions, Confessions, Rosaries and meditations on the mysteries of the Rosary, done with the intention of making reparation to the Immaculate Heart of MARY and you have the promise of salvation by the Queen of Angels Herself!

Who could possibly doubt the love of the Immaculate Heart for each of Her children? No earthly mother could love us as much as She loves each one of us. And if that Immaculate Heart was rent with compassion when upon this earth, seeing a bride and groom in need of some wine at their wedding, how can one dare to doubt that the Mother of our souls is quite bursting with a holy eagerness, a violent pouring out of itself to secure the salvation of all her children now that She reigns as the very Queen of Heaven? She loves us, this is for sure.

MARY is our Mother, the Mother of Mercy. She glances unceasingly from Heaven, looking at our every move. She keeps us company in our daily tasks and is tenderly watching over every movement of our hearts. Oh, if only we could see Her presence we would be astonished to know that at every moment She was with us! Oh how shocked we will be when we reach the eternal shores, to know that She was really listening to every Ave Maria we uttered, to every little “I love you!” To see that every glance of our eyes at Her Image was not lost to the Blessed Virgin MARY. We will be astonished indeed to see the care that our Mother has given us.

Poor souls who do not know and love MARY dear brethren! “He that shall find me shall find life, and shall have salvation from the Lord.” (Prov. 8.17.) Commenting on this line of scripture, St. Alphonsus in his Glories of Mary gives us these words of St. Bonaventure: “Listen on these words, listen, all you who desire the kingdom of God; honour the most Blessed Virgin Mary, and you will find life and eternal salvation.” (5)

Let us close this circular reflecting on the great miracle of the sun which was the culmination of the Fatima apparitions, for it was the seal of the Divine origin of these messages from Heaven. In this miracle we are presented with prodigious realities which burst forth like so many beams of light for the good of our souls!

First, the sun terrified those viewing it as it seemed to “dance” and plunge to the earth in a very threatening manner. In this can we not envisage the consequences of ignoring the warning of Our Lady of Fatima and Her requests? Do we not see in this the terrible Justice of Almighty God, the Lord God who in an instant could annihilate what He Himself has created? Can we be deaf to Our Lady’s request to stop offending the good God who has already been outraged and offended enough? If we do not, punishment is imminent.

The sun then changed colours, the people could look at it without hurting their eyes. They who were moments ago, dirty, and soaked from the rain were now clean and dry, and yet they were not burnt to a crisp by this immense heat! “The sun shall not burn thee by day.”( Ps. 120.v.6.) In this event we can see the consequences of heeding Our Lady of Fatima. The protection of Our Lady Herself, souls in the state of grace, clean. Souls who will experience the glorious colours, the joyful light of the glory of Heaven for all eternity!

To turn the tide in this colossal struggle between the dragon and the Woman clothed with the sun, Our Lady has given the necessary instructions. The Pope must consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of MARY. The future good of our world, and of our souls depends on this consecration. The future is in the hands of those who use them to hold a simple set of beads, while reciting a simple set of prayers, literally.

When the Virgin appeared to Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco, only the girls could see Her. Our Lady stated that if little Francisco was to be able to see Her, he must pray the Rosary. Upon obeying this command, She appeared too, to Francisco.

If we want the Church to come out of this crisis, and if we truly desire peace in this world, we will never have it without the intervention of MARY, for She has stated that only She could help us now. It is the Will of God, and so, let us pray the Rosary.

Your unworthy servant in the Immaculate Heart of our Mother,

Fra Pio-Francis T.O.S.F.
