As Hurricane Katrina swept through New Orleans, many lives were lost. A great part of the city was submerged in water. However, this devastation does not compare to the evil of one deliberate venial sin! Yes, my friends. Even though venial sin does not destroy the life of grace in our souls, one who knowingly and willingly commits even the slightest venial sin is insulting the Almighty God, our ultimate Good. For the soul that is seeking perfection, deliberate venial sin must be cut out like a tumour. It is a serious obstacle to union with Our Lord. This is even more true for the Franciscan tertiary since he has chosen a life of prayer and penance for the greater honour and glory of God and love of neighbour. Therefore, a tertiary who says "Lord, I know that the act I am about to perform is a sin, but it is only a slight sin" is not worthy of the name. Rather, a tertiary must have the attitude that death be better than offend God in even the slightest matter. Would the Seraphic Father St. Francis think otherwise? Tertiary or otherwise, let us work on rooting out all deliberate venial sin from our lives for the love of God.
May God bless you all.
